ARTIST 'S STATEMENT
Welcome to my website. I consider myself fortunate to have enjoyed a career I love—both teaching and creating art. Now I get to share these occupations with my artist husband, Craig Masten. Although we enjoy traveling and painting together, our approaches and styles are very different.
As a native Rhode Islander, I grew up exploring many of the scenic locations we now paint. Being sentimental, I try to preserve memories of these places before time and change erode them. I prefer to work with watercolors outside when weather permits. This allows me to quickly capture the light and mood of the landscape. Then I finish work indoors using reference photographs I’ve taken. I usually do oil painting inside in the studio during the winter. In all my artwork, I always use my own photos. This not only gives me a personal point of view, it’s a wonderful way to relive travels and experiences.
I received a Masters Degree in Art and Education from Rhode Island School of Design in 1980, and previously a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hartford Art School in 1972. I taught art for over thirty years, primarily at North Kingstown High School, and now teach watercolors at the Providence Art Club.
I am an artist member of Spring Bull Gallery in Newport and the Providence Art Club, also a signature member of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. Other artist memberships include the Cape Cod Art Association, the Wickford Art Association, the South County Art Association, the Newport Art Museum, and the Newport Artist’s Guild. I’ve exhibited and received awards in numerous local, regional and national open juried shows.
My paintings are regularly on exhibit at Spring Bull Gallery, and can also be seen at the studio I share with Craig in the Deacon Taylor House, one of four buildings of the Providence Art Club. Our studio is open on Providence Gallery Nights (third Thursday of each month from March to November), by appointment, or whenever we are there working.
